Some of you have noticed that you no longer need the password given out in training to access the Listen Up! Vermont web site. The site is in the "go live" process, and trust me when I say that we all owe a million thanks to Chris Kirby from Ilsley Public in Middlebury for all of his incredibly detailed hard work getting the site ready.
Sometime in the next two days, you will see a pull-down menu for your patrons to choose your library from when they try to log in, and then a request for their library card number. If you have a check digit at the end of your barcode OR you are not automated, we are still in the process of figuring out exactly the best way for your patrons to log in. It looks as though check digits will be okay, and that non-automated patrons will have to log in using the combination of the prefix your library gave to the GMLC and your patron number. Stay tuned for a confirmation on that. (Update, 4:18pm: all participants should have received an email from Stephanie with more information about logging in and some cards to doctor up and hand out. Please let me know by email if you did not receive them -- schase[at]stowelibrary.org.)
In the meantime, you might find that your library card is rejected, or that you can't see your library name yet, etc -- don't fret. Let's just give Chris and the team at OverDrive the time they need to finish up, and keep checking back!
Welcome to the Listen Up! Vermont blog for library staff, volunteers, and trustees, and interested users. This is a project of the Green Mountain Library Consortium (www.gmlc.wordpress.com), a group of libraries joining together to provide downloadable audiobooks and eBooks, a shared integrated library system (VOKAL-Koha), and the language-learning program, Mango, to users around Vermont. Promotional materials
Don't worry -- we are working on getting promotional materials for the Listen Up! project. Where we're all volunteers, sometimes things take a bit longer, but custom-made bookmarks directly from OverDrive will be available in a few weeks (every member will get some for free -- more on that closer to their arrival), and once our custom materials are created, libraries may order posters, shelf-talkers, little business cards, and more bookmarks directly.
In the meantime, feel free to access OverDrive's standard materials. Print these out in color for yourself. You can also download the price list for purchasing custom materials later, by scrolling down inside the Box widget (the policies are still below, too):
Get your own Box.net widget and share anywhere!
Here's a link to web logos, for you to put on your web site:

Two more things should be coming soon down the pike: a press release for us to all share, and access to some more standard materials.

Policies for Listen Up!
Please feel free to download and review the policies below:
Get your own Box.net widget and share anywhere!
These policies cover the selection of materials (created from suggestions of the original group that created Listen Up!) for the project as well as the circulation policies (the terms of which were drawn from the most popular responses from GMLC participants). There is also a reconsideration of materials form, in case any of your patrons object to a title in the collection.
And who are the Board of Directors? For this first year of the GMLC, Judah Hamer (Rutland), Lucinda Walker (Norwich), and Stephanie Chase (Stowe) are serving as the three member board. We'll be responsible for creating policies (such as these), guiding the Consortium through the incorporation process in Vermont and the Federal 501(c)3 process, and creating bylaws.

DCF and Green Mountain titles
We're getting closer and closer to our March 1 start date. I hope everyone has been enjoying the trainings!
I wanted to let folks know that if you would like to direct your patrons, students, or staff to the titles in our downloadable collection that are either DCF or Green Mountain Book Award titles, you can give them the following link:
http://www.listenupvermont.org/award
This link will take them directly to that collection (once we have correctly assigned the titles, of course, and after March 1!).

FAQ: questions from trainings
Hello all,
here are a few more questions from the trainings:
here are a few more questions from the trainings:
- If the audio book is in my basket or waiting for someone to pick up the hold, is it available? No. Just as in your physical library, if someone is carrying the book around or it is on the hold shelf waiting for someone, someone else can't pick it up.
- Who chooses Staff Picks? Well, really, we all can. Did you listen to one of the audio books in our collection that you really liked? Let us know, and we can add it there!
- Can a patron see what they have taken out before? Not on the web site. I have noticed, though, that titles can stay in the OverDrive Media Console.
- What if I -- or my patrons -- need help? A recording of the Tuesday 3pm training will be available for us to have later. That's great if you couldn't make a training. All participants will have the slides from the presentation emailed to them as well -- let Stephanie know at schase[at]stowelibrary.org know if you need one of those slide PDFs. You have some other fabulous options, too, at the top right for help -- the 25-minute guided tour, check out assistance (with information on borrowing policies), and more.
- What about promotional materials? We have purposefully waited to put out the promotional materials until after the trainings. The service is set to go live on March 1, but we imagine this will be a "soft" opening -- letting the momentum build up slowly, as library staff becomes comfortable with the service. Look for publicity materials to start becoming available next week.
- What is this 10 digit number I am using? This is just while the site is in development. Once we go live, your patrons will use whatever the number was you gave to the GMLC. That might be your 14 digit barcode, or it might be your 4 digit prefix plus a two or three or four digit patron number.

FAQ: questions from training sessions
I sat in on most of this morning's training, and here are some questions that came up. The first two were answered by Annie from OverDrive:
- Where does the ISBN for a digital title come from?OverDrive uses the ISBN from the audio book on CD version of the title.
- How can a library block the downloading of content within the library?
If you want to block the downloading of content from within the library, please let Stephanie Chase know the IP address range of the patron facing computers and she can work with your Project Manager to enable this for you. The patrons will still be able to browse and checkout content from within the library, however they will not be able to download the actual content. If you are not able to separate patron and staff computers, OverDrive can provide you with a URL to block from within the library. - Who is doing the purchasing? The purchasing is done by your five-member selection committee for the entire consortium. Individual libraries are more than welcome to contribute additional funds, although titles purchased with those funds will be available to the entire consortium.
- What about burning to cd? The majority of OverDrive's collection can be burned to cd. The ability to burn to cd is determined by the publisher of the content. Once burned to cd, the patron may keep the cds for life for their own personal use. It would be "against the rules" for the patron to upload the file to a file-sharing site or for the library to circulate the burned cds.
- Can I "return" a book early? The downloadable audio books are checked out to a patron for a one-week period, and cannot be "checked back in" early -- the file will become unusable on the patron's computer at the end of the week-long period and available again for download. The main reason for this is digital rights management -- it prevents patrons from abusing the system.
- What about moving the file to a mp3 player? During the check out period, the audio book file can be put on to a mp3 player -- some publishers limit the number of devices the file can be copied to (for example, to 20). Others do not. Teachers and school librarians might want to think of the implications of this for class-wide access to titles.
- How long does the file stay on my mp3 player? With very, very few exceptions (such as a smart phone or pocket pc), mp3 players do not recognize the file expiration date. So, the audio book stays on your mp3 player until you take it off.
- Why can't I find my favorite author? Well, the consortium might have not purchased anything by your favorite author. Or, you might have looked for the author using the method we often employ in libraries: last name, first name. The search in OverDrive is a search string, so it looks for the words in order. So, look for James Patterson instead of Patterson, James.
- How long do I have to download the parts? You have the week-long check out period. So, you could download a part or two a day, if you wanted.
- Can I use this on a Mac? You need a Windows-based operating system (98 second edition, ME, 2000, XP or Vista) to download the title. The digital rights management (DRM) that allows for checking items in and out uses Windows Media Player version 9 or higher. Windows Media Player for Macs is based on an older version.

A note on trainings
We hope everyone is looking forward to taking the Digital Library 1o1 courses next week, offered by OverDrive!
We have participants signed up for every time slot, so all five trainings will run. If you need to switch training times, no problem -- unless you are switching out of the Tuesday or Thursday 3pm time slots, which are the smallest. If that's the case, be sure to let me know at schase[at]stowelibrary.org.
School librarians -- those 3pm time slots may be an excellent opportunity for you to get your staff, especially your Special Education department, trained!
Misplaced your instructions for accessing the training? Be sure to send me an email! And, in case you need those times again, they are:

Vote on a logo, and more about MARC
First off -- a question about MARC records. Would people like to purchase MARC records for $1 each from OverDrive? If so, we'll get the records for every title in our collection ready for automated libraries to load in their catalogs.
Another option is that anyone out there using BookWhere -- as we are in Stowe -- to get their MARC records should be able to access MARC records for these titles, as BookWhere draws records from many big libraries that use OverDrive. These records would need to have the embedded URLs changed to reflect our collection.
If we can get a volunteer to download and change the MARC records, we have the opportunity to save $1 every time we buy a book -- that could be $500 or more every year. We only need to buy one set of these MARC records for the entire consortium to share, and the records provide a listing in your catalog for the titles, and a direct link for patrons to access the title through our OverDrive page. Opinion is mixed on this, so we're looking for guidance.
And second, folks seem to be ready to vote on a logo, so here's your chance:
Don't forget to sign up for your trainings! You can only vote once per computer, we have discovered, so if your staff will be doing different days, you'll have to vote from different computers. And, if your whole staff is interested in that Tuesday afternoon time, get them to vote! Don't forget: your whole staff, your volunteers, your trustees -- everyone can take this training.
