Welcome to the Listen Up! Vermont blog for library staff, volunteers, and trustees, and interested users. This is a project of the Green Mountain Library Consortium (www.gmlc.wordpress.com), a group of libraries joining together to provide downloadable audiobooks and eBooks, a shared integrated library system (VOKAL-Koha), and the language-learning program, Mango, to users around Vermont. Looking for the Listen Up! Vermont site to download digital content? Visit www.listenupvermont.org.

Sign up for Round Two!
It's that time again: Round Two of signups for the Listen Up! Vermont downloadable audio book project are underway! If your library isn't currently participating, give it some thought:
** we've gone over 3,000 checkouts in just about three months
** had press all around the state (including the Burlington Free Press, the Times-Argus, and Vermont Public Radio)
** the project serves towns whose populations make up 45% of the state population
** and every member library to date has added, in just three months, more than 300 additional audio titles to their collection, without requiring an inch of shelf space!
Round Two will begin on August 1, 2008, with information due by July 1, 2008. We will accept new member signups until June 30, 2008.
New member libraries will have access to the full collection of titles, and their Green Mountain Library Consortium (GMLC) fees will go to purchase additional materials, most likely in mp3 format. These libraries -- as well as all those currently participating -- will have access to another round of Digital Library 101 training in July.
All libraries joining Round Two are required to pay a one-time, non-negotiable fee to OverDrive (contact Stephanie at schase[at]stowelibrary.org for the amount of the fee) in addition to their GMLC fee. You can view the 2008 GMLC fees below:
http://vtaudiobooks.blogspot.com/2007/11/faq-how-much-does-it-cost.html
This GMLC fee is not pro-rated and covers a calendar year; for Round Two, it purchases you access for July 1 to December 31, 2008. Annual fees will begin to be due again in January 2009 for the 2009 calendar year.
We know this might make it difficult for some libraries to join up in July, but it is important that all libraries contribute equally to the creation and building of this new collection of materials. Ask around for support for that fee -- your Friends of the Library, your Board of Trustees, your favorite patron.
We will offer additional opportunities to join up in the future, perhaps in the Fall, and again in early 2009.
Be sure to let us know if you have any questions -- contact Stephanie Chase at schase[at]stowelibrary.org or check out this blog for answers and info.

iPod update
Team OverDrive is headed to the American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim June 28 - July 1. If you are attending, join us in booth #1280 as we demonstrate the latest services and technology for digital media, including the new OverDrive MP3 Audiobook format (compatible with iPods ®). Plus, you'll have a chance to win an MP3 player every 30 minutes.
OverDrive has also released a new version of the OverDrive Media Console:
OverDrive Media Console (OMC) v3.0, now available at your digital library website, offers many features that your patrons have been anticipating. You and all your users are invited to upgrade to the new OMC v3.0.
In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received from our Transfer Wizard, we have added a Burn to CD Wizard. With OMC v3.0, patrons no longer need to launch Windows Media Player to burn to CD. Instead, in just a few clicks, patrons can burn WMA audio titles through OMC. Clicking the ‘Burn’ button launches the Burn Wizard, which guides the user through this simple and straightforward burn process. For your audiobook users who burn titles to CD, they will be excited to learn that the new Burn Wizard splits OverDrive’s Audiobook parts into tracks (based on the existing MediaMarkers), allowing users to more easily navigate content they have burned to CD.
As announced and covered in the press, OverDrive will introduce the new OverDrive MP3 Audiobook (compatible with iPods). OMC v3.0 supports the new MP3 format. When OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks are available (coming Summer 2008), Windows users who have already installed OMC v3.0 will be able to use titles in this format. Users of earlier versions will need to upgrade to OMC v3.0 to enjoy OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks. To learn more about OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks, read the press release and Library Journal’s coverage of the exciting news.
OverDrive is grateful for your feedback and suggestions that have allowed us to release this exciting new version of OverDrive Media Console. If you have any questions, please contact your Project Manager or email our Support Team at support@libraryreserve.com.
